Many modern light duty engines are manufactured by OEMs without any cylinder liners, with the piston running directly inside the block. Such engines may also be rebored during overhaul to a bigger diameter and then a dry liner, or sleeve inserted in the rebored block to bring it back to nominal size.

Oil Pan Gasket

Oil pan gaskets, also known as sump gaskets, seal the joint between the engine block and the oil pan, which contains the engine lubricating oil. Hence appropriate rubber and cork based compounds resistant to oil, solvents and fuels are used. Defective seal at the sump will cause oil drops at a minimum and excessive oil consumption in the worst cases.

Valve Stem Seals

The most important function of a valve stem seal is to meter the flow of lubricating oil along the valve stem. If it seals too tightly, chances of valve scuffing and ultimately seizure increase due to insufficient lubrication between the valve guide and the valve stem. However, if the seal is not tight enough, too much oil will seep through causing excessive oil consumption and high emission level in the engine.

Connecting rods, or conrods, convert the reciprocating movement of the piston to the rotary movement of the crankshaft. Hence they are subject to a very complex and continuously varying loading throughout the combustion cycle. Weight of the conrod is a determining factor in the power-to-weight ratio and smooth operation of an engine. A variety of steel alloys and machining techniques are used in their production. Modern engines utilize fracture-split or cracked conrods while compact V-engines use split end conrods. Majority of conrods are manufactured by drop forging process, while casting and powdered metal / sintered conrods are also being used.

Majority of modern engines are liquid cooled, as opposed to the older air-cooled engines. To pump this coolant through the engine is the work of the engine water pump, or the coolant pump. Usually these are centrifugal pumps that circulate water (or coolant) through the various cooling channels cast into the head and the block. The coolant collects the heat and dissipates it through the radiator.

Piston Rings

Piston rings are metallic gaskets that are installed into the ring grooves of the pistons. To minimize frictional losses, the trend is toward smaller number of rings per cylinder, with the standard being 3 top 2 are compression rings, followed by 1 oil control ring. The compression rings seal the combustion gases into the combustion chamber thus maximizing power output, while the oil control ring maintains a thin layer of oil along the liner wall to minimize sliding friction between rings and liners. The middle ring is often a shoulder bevel ring that strips off excess oil from the liner wall.

Modern diesel engines apply two pumps to create sufficient fuel injection pressure at the injectors. First a low-pressure lift pump or feed pump is used to raise level of the fuel from the fuel tank up to the fuel injection pump. The high pressure injection pump then takes over and controls the quantity as well as pressure of the fuel inside the injectors.
