Oil seals are critical to prevent passage of this lubricating oil along the shaft to the other areas of the engine where it can cause serious damage.

TYPES OF OIL SEALS
MATERIAL
Viton, Silicone, Neoprene, Nitrile, Polyacrylate and Polyurethene are commonly used sealing materials, which are mounted on a metal case usually made of mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass and phosphor bronze.
DESIGN
Depending on the application following designs are used in oil seal design:
- A Type Metal Insert
- B Type Metal Clad
- C Closed Type
There is usually a dust lip incorporated in applications exposed to atmospheric contaminants and the sealing material usually has a primary lip or scraper member which scrapes excess oil from the shaft and redirects it towards the periphery of the seal from where it is drained away.
